ââ¬Å"The Destructorsâ⬠and ââ¬Å"The Lotteryâ⬠Fiction Essay Introduction Some may say that we are, as human beings, a violent people by nature. We see it in our own history of wars and genocide that the violence in us can grow to extreme proportions. These two stories, ââ¬Å"The Destructorsâ⬠by Graham Greene, and ââ¬Å"The Lotteryâ⬠by Shirley Jackson, show us that some of the violence can be brought on by people simply following blindly. Whether we look at the past or the present, these two short stories, show us the mob mentality can be very dangerous. The long dead tradition of ââ¬Å"The Lotteryâ⬠tells of the town people forgetting most of the different parts of the tradition because it takes too long, or is not feasible. The one part they neverâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Jackson herself was born in San Francisco, California in 1916 and later entered Syracuse University in New York around 1937 (Jackson, 2009). The location setting in ââ¬Å"The Lotteryâ⬠doesnââ¬â¢t seem relevant to any of the places Jackson has liv ed. The storyââ¬â¢s setting is more of a rural type farming area, whereas Jackson has lived in mostly city environments. Comparing the two stories regarding regional writing, ââ¬Å"The Destructorsâ⬠setting was inspired by Greeneââ¬â¢s own geographical location and his own experiences regarding World War II. In Jacksonââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"The Lotteryâ⬠, the location is vaguer. She paints a picture of a small rural farming type town and didnââ¬â¢t seem to draw inspiration from places she herself has lived. Jackson tells us in an interview that the story came to her rather quickly and tells how it came about. Jackson says, ââ¬Å"I had the idea fairly clearly in my mind when I put my daughter in her playpen and the frozen vegetables in the refrigerator and, writing the story, I found that it went quickly and easily, moving from beginning to end without pause.
